| Although published reflections on the vices and virtues of film translation can date back to the early twentieth century,scholarly work on audiovisual translation only began to gain traction after the surge of translation studies in the 1990s(Perez-Gonzalez,2014:2).Nowadays,we see the birth of massive audiovisual products every day,which are produced and consumed in multi-modal ways.In recent years,the translation of introduced overseas films like Pacific Rim,Avengers:Age of Ultron,and Kung Fu Panda 3 has sparked heated discussion and controversies,which shows that audiovisual translation should gain more attraction in the field of translation studies.This is the report of the translation task of English-Chinese subtitling of Fei Hu:The Story of the Flying Tigers,a tribute documentary to the 70th anniversary of the victory of Anti-Japanese War.It reviews the work before,during,and after the translation,and analyzes some techniques and strategies combined with multi-modal features.Besides,this report consolidates the literature review,as well as explaining the theories with vivid case studies.The report discusses some strategies at textual level,for example,reduction,segmentation and line breaks.It emphasizes the strategies at multimodal level,unfolding them from the four sub-modes:language,sound,music,and image.The spatial and temporal constraints and the mediation between different modes and sub-modes make subtitling different from traditional literature translation.The author wants to share his experience and reflection and encourage the peer translators to keep upgrading themselves in terms of the"soft powers" of translation like employing subtitle software to polish the competitive edge in the future job market.The significance of this report lies in the referential value for subtitling project management and subtitling practice.Besides,it also tries to encourage translators in the audiovisual sector to make self-improvement to promote their career development. |
