Since its introduction, the tragedy Hamlet has become the most beautiful flower in the garden of world literature. The art life of the tragedy has gone through time and space, and is still flourishing now.It is popular with spectators and readers of different countries and ages. And it is also a favorite play of critics.Up to now, analyses and comments on this work have far exceeded the words of its manuscripts.Scholars have analyzed Hamlet at different levels, which results in different conclusions and viewpoints.Different views contradict and conflict with each other. This proves that there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes;meanwhile it shows its indeterminacy.Shakespeare discusses many questions, and for each,we can hear completely opposite voices.Readers can sense that the souls of the characters of the tragedy are struggling in contradiction.Plus,Shakespeare arranges death for the main characters,no matter they are good or evil,as if a troop marched toward death.Compassion and evil, justice and injustice, all perish. While it earns sympathy of audiences and readers,it passes on confusion, indeterminacy as well as doubt to them, and makes them continue to think, judge and choose, for such an ending can not embody the playwright's moral orientation and judgment of values.Because the characters of the work express contradictory polar opinions about the same issue, readers and audiences of different ages and places draw different images of the same character, some of which are completely opposing. For this, the author of the paper argues that the tragedy Hamlet is of contradiction and incongruity in the cognition of the same issues and passes on uncertain messages to readers. The thesis explores the indeterminacy of the tragedy through contrast, analysis and examples. The author studies the subject from the following three aspects: 1.the indeterminacy in the cognition of man;2.the indeterminacy in the ethical relationship in Hamlet: 3.the determinacy in the meaning of existence.
