Foucault was a creative and rebellious thinker in contemporary France. His view of modern society was very unique, and he had profound insights into the problems of modern society. His theoretical research in different periods originated from the practical problems he was paying attention to at the time;therefore, his thoughts have great practical significance.Marked in the 1980s,the research of Foucault showed a clear distinction. In the late stage of his theoretical research,Foucault turned to the exploration of ethics, with the idea of"care of the self"as its important content. The idea emerged because of Foucault’s concern about the issue of modern subjectivity. It aimed to seek the possibility of the return of ethical subjects in modern society through the understanding of the genealogy of the self. This paper is mainly about Foucault’s thought of"care of the self".The full text is divided into three parts. The first part is a brief review of the ideological background and theoretical premise of the thought.First, there is the social and cultural background from which the thought of Foucault occurred.Next, there comes to the transformation process of Foucault’s thinking. The second part makes a relatively complete presentation of the structure and content of the"care of the self",including his problem consciousness when proposing this thought, and the starting point, core and purpose of"care of the self" as the strategy for the reconstruction of the ethical subject. The third part is about the evaluation of the idea of"care of the self’,including theoretical difficulties and practical significance. The first part tries to give a possible response to the doubts about this idea in the academic circle. The last part analyzes the real problems of today’s society through this kind of thinking, and extracts reflections and lessons from it,and on this basis, carries out the imagination of pluralistic society,At the same time,it highlights the unique practical significance and inspiration of the idea of"care of the self".
