The Research On China English Lexis From The Perspective Of Language Contact

The thesis collects CE lexis from Oxford English Dictionary and the news concerning culture,politics,and economy in China Daily of 2015 with the Chinese loanwords in the dictionary serving as the inner circle CE lexis,while those from China daily the outer circle CE lexis and establishes the List of China English Lexis(LCL).Based on the established LCL,the thesis conducts the discussion on CE lexis according to the sequence of “the contact between Chinese and English----the formation of China English lexis---the analysis of the features of CE lexis---the influence of CE lexis on English” from the perspective of language contact by doing qualitative analysis and comparative study.The research is conducted from the following aspects:(1).Reasons for the formation of CE lexis:The more and more frequent contact between China and English-speaking countries in culture,politics and economy;(2).The formation of CE lexis:Five translation methods used in the formation of CE lexis and their respective usage frequency;(3).Features of CE lexis:the phonological features and the distribution of the phonological sources;the grammatical features;the semantic features and semantic distribution;conclusion of the influence of CE lexis on standard English.The research mainly comes to the following conclusions:(1).The reason for the appearance of CE lexis is the more and more frequent contact between Chinese and English caused by the more and more intimate communication between China and English-speaking countries in culture,politics,economy and so on;(2).There are mainly five formation methods of CE lexis: literal translation,free translation,transliteration,hybrid translation and explanatory translation,among which transliteration is used in forming inner circle CE lexis most frequently,while literal translation and free translation are most frequently used in forming outer circle CE lexis;(3).The features of CE lexis are: in phonology,being affected by Chinese dialects and mandarin,Wade-Giles romanization and Latin;in grammar,the English words used to form CE lexis only remain their pronunciation,while their grammatical functions don't exist any more;in semantics: CE lexis enables to express things with Chinese characteristics by semantic broadening and narrowing,the conversion in the color of meaning,meaning extension and meaning innovation and the lexis concerning Chinese unique cultural phenomena takes up 82% of all the CE lexis;because of its uniqueness and unsubstitutable significance,CE lexis expands the vocabulary of English,enriches the diversity of English,strengthens the expression capacity of English and fills in the cultural gaps between China and English-speaking countries and serves as a bridge for their contact;(4).The problem in the development of CE lexis: there is a lack of standards for the use of CE lexis,which may throw its use in chaos.The research has certain significance and necessity.Firstly,the research focuses on the analysis of China English lexis,hoping that this pointcut can make it more systematic and in-depth;secondly,different from the traditional methods that conduct the analysis by giving some examples randomly,this research collects lots of CE lexis to establish the List of China English Lexis(LCL),and further divides it into inner circle and outer circle CE lexis,which makes the whole research more scientific and standardized,the discussion more systematic and full,and the research result more objective and credible.This research process is innovative and can be used for reference in the future researches.At the same time,the established LCL enables the author to analyze the CE lexis from a broader view,and it is found that there is confusion in the use of CE lexis,which means there are sometimes several CE lexis for one thing or phenomena with Chinese characteristics,and this undoubtedly brings difficulties for English-speaking people to understand and accept those words,and further impedes the development of CE lexis,so the author gives the solution for this problem to standardize the use of CE lexis and further promote the standardization of China English.Besides,the research results have implications for vocabulary teaching,translation and cross-cultural communication and so on.
