Gossip Girl is adapted from the best-selling novel with the same title.It mainly depicts the western youngsters' real social problem: excessive drinking,drug taking and chaotic sexual relation and so on.The writer's original intention of producing this series of novels is to satirize the decadent life and the seamy side of the infighting in the private excessive school in the Upper East Side and disclose those playboys and those wealthy girls' various disgraceful scene under their glossy appearance.The thesis will consist of three chapters.The first part is a brief introduction to Gossip Girl,the studies abroad and at home,the problem to be studied and the theory to be applied in this thesis.The second part is the main body which includes three chapters.Chapter one,it will make an analysis of the decadent life from various parties and grand balls,chaotic sexual relations,drug taking under the influence of the consumerism.Chapter two,it will discuss the utilitarian and indifferent relationship about the family relationship,love and friendship influenced by the consumerism.Chapter three,it will analyze the loss of spiritual garden from the perspective of the degeneration of the ethics and morality,the vanity of life value and the loss of the ideal under the influence of the consumerism.The third part is the concluding part in which the main idea of the thesis is summarized as follows: the consumerism makes people chase fame and wealth,lead a decadent life and lose their spiritual garden.
