Nanjing is a large print center of the Ming Dynasty, the illustrations of the popular fictions have important research value: one is the evolution of the illustration style, and the other is relationship between pictures and text, both of these reflect the appearance and evolution of the Ming Dynasty woodblock illustrations. Therefore,We will carry out research about the illustration of Nanjing popular novels:The first chapter is “The Inscribing of the Ming Dynasty Nanjing Popular Novel Illustrations”.Nanjing carving industry is so prosperous, the reason is that Nanjing is not only the economic and cultural center of the Ming Dynasty, but also the liberal cultural policy of the Ming Dynasty, the convenient transportation and the gathering of talents in Nanjing.According to the statistics,25 bookshops had published 45 kinds of popular novels in Nanjing in Ming Dynasty. The second chapter is “The Style And Evolution of Nanjing Popular Novel Illustrations ”,this is the focus of this article.Since Zheng Zhenduo, scholars believe that the style of illustrations has regional characteristics, such as “Jian'yang style”,“Jinling style” and “Huipai style”,and so on,and style of illustrations is determined by engravers. However, the style of Nanjing illustration is not unique to Nanjing, and the formation of the style of illustration is not determined by engravers, also. This means that we have to abandon the inherent conclusions, and reacquaint the style of illustrations. This paper not only analyzes the viewpoint of the style of illustrations by Zheng Zhenduo, that is “carving center theory” and “regional genre theory”,also by comparing the illustrations of the other areas of popular fictions, opera illustrations, poetry collection's illustrations, and New Year paintings illustrations at that time, and trace to its source, finally defines the true style of Nanjing popular novel illustrations, folk art style and painterly style. And the reasons of the style of Nanjing popularfiction illustrations, that evolved from folk art style to the painterly style,is not only the merchant but also the social and economic factors. The third chapter is “the Relationship between the Illustrations and Texts of Nanjing popular Novels”,which is also the focus of this paper. The illustrations of the popular novel in Nanjing consist of two parts: drawing and words in the figure,so the relationship between the picture and the text includes drawing-text relation and words-text relation. However,at present, the research on the relationship between the illustrations and text in the academic circles,is mainly focus on these two aspects: the illustrations painted whether or not as the text said, and how the illustrations match the text, and these two aspects are included in the research areas of drawing-text relation. As for the other part of the illustrations, words in the figure, while few people interested,on the other hand,words-text relation, are also ignored. Moreover, the relationship between the illustrations and texts is not an abstract concept, which is reflected through the drawing and words in the figure, behind this relationship contains the essence, this is“external presentation” and “internal mechanism” of the relationship between the illustrations and texts. However, this is also ignored.Just because of this, this paper not only find what we should research, but also the research method, that these are "word-image" intertextuality theory and iconography theory.this paper analysis drawing-text relation and words-text relation through the “external presentation”,and analysis the “internal mechanism” through "word-image" intertextuality theory and iconography theory.
