Research On The Illustrations Of Ancient

As an organic component of Chinese ancient popular novel, Illustration of novel has impacts on narrating of novel text itself and gradually forms its own features on narrating and expressing, which is regarded as images for narrating involved in novel texts. Through taking part in the creating and spreading course of the novel, it makes novel change from pure text to text with illustrations. Development of Chinese ancient illustration novel is long and complicated. In order to make clear its forming reasons and courses, and inquire its impacts later on, this paper was based on Ping Hua of Sanguo series with illustrations in Yuan Zhi Zhi edition to deeply research characterizations and functions of illustrations, and more understand its historical progress of novel with illustrations to clear illustrations in relations to text, illustrations authors or publishers, readers,and novels with illustrations for the later generations at the macro and micro two levels.Except introduction part about academic summaries of researches on Chinese popular novel with illustrations, this paper was divided into three sections: one was about development of ancient novel with illustrations andits forming background. It combed its history of development from paintings in Han Dynasty to Buddhist paintings in Tang Dynasty, and then to Biographies for women in Song edition. At an angle of illustrations of novel to analyze the formation of Ping Hua of Sanguo series with illustrations, it pointed out that appearing and widely using of images for narrating was a premise, outer reason was for sprouting of commodity economy and inner reason was for wakening thoughts of citizens. The other was about characterizations and functions of Ping Hua of Sanguo series with illustrations. Based on its own language-figure style, we can see its representations such as reading mode for illustrations above and texts below, representing mode for illustrations series, controlling mode for mutual explanations with titles Yin and Yang and primary figures mode for numbers of figures. And on this, we can analyze its functions of narrating,criticizing, directing, and transmitting and characterize its features for binding language with illustrations, criticizing for illustrations and titles,pausing narrating and staring at reading. And the last was its effects later on.It affected narrating ways of novel with figure caption, heading, and chapter title added and appreciation changing. And it also affected publishing ways of novel with focusing on illustrations in publishing and publicity. And more was its reading ways with experience and value pursuit changing.It was an occasional choice for appearance of Ping Hua of Sanguo seriesdevelopment of urban economy and effects of citizens’ culture. Its appearance not only increased narrating ways of novel,but also changed traditional reading habits. Meanwhile, it satisfied readers’ demands of visual enjoyment. Thus, we can see its reference to literature creating and transmitting.
