Stylistic Analysis Of The Sitcom How I Met Your Mother

This thesis analyzed the linguistic features of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother from the perspective of stylistics.It is aimed at analyzing the language characteristics of the script from graphological level,lexical level,and syntactic level.The author selects 9 episodes from the first season as the corpus by the way of drawing lots.At graphological level,the noticeable stylistic features are frequent use of commas,uniqueness in spelling,and distinct printing format.At lexical level,the noticeable stylistic features are frequent use of monosyllabic words,basic words,and informal words and expressions.At syntactic level,the noticeable stylistic features are frequent use of simple sentences,sentences employing active voice,and minor sentences.This thesis offers a relatively new perspective for the research on sitcom What’s more,this research can reveal the value of stylistics in analyzing language,and to some extent it is valuable to stylistic teaching.
