Study On Translation Of Disease And Syndrome Terms From The Perspective Of Frame Semantics

As the earliest extant treatise on internal miscellaneous diseases,Synopsis of Golden Chamber enjoys a reputation as the "Disease-treating norm".Influenced by the increasingly embracing the world stage of traditional Chinese medicine,translation of Synopsis of Golden Chamber has become a major subject in the study of TCM international exchange.The disease and syndrome terms serve as the basis for understanding of principle-method-recipe-medicines in Synopsis of Golden Chamber,the bridge of connecting theory with applications as well as the window for having a restricted view of distinctive culture of traditional Chinese culture,which therefore are considered as the key point for translation of Synopsis of Golden Chamber.As is put forward by Xu Lingtai,a famous physician from the Qing dynasty in his monograph Treatise on the the Origin and Development of Medicine that knowing the disease and syndrome terms is the first step for diagnosis and treatment of diseases.Each disease has its own main prescription and each prescription is dominated by one herb.However,the challenges of disease and syndrome terms' translation lie in their formation in generations ago,their expression in ancient words,their complex evolution in history and their abundance in cultural connotation.Hence,the disease and syndrome terms should be considered as the anchor point and breakthrough for study of translation of Synopsis of Golden Chamber.With the flourishing of cultural turn in translation study,the translation activity gives the priority to such considerations as political,economic,geographic and human factors based on the pure language and words.Frame semantics,a new theory for language cognition,is quiet persuasive and convincing for explaining the translation behavior aimed at cultural transmission.This paper included 75 disease and syndrome terms from Synopsis of Golden Chamber,which were further divided into four categories,that is,terms named after symptoms and signs,terms named after essential attributes,terms named after metaphors and terms named after the above combination,and made the comparison between two translation versions of Luo Xiwen and Ruan Jiyuan under the guidance of frame semantics,so as to explore the frame construction for disease and syndrome term translation,the direction for translator subjectivity and the system of translation strategies.It is proved that frame semantics is conductive to enriching the TCM translation theory and broadening TCM translation horizon,especially in constructing translation idea,elucidating translation phenomena,guiding translation behavior and evaluating translation quality.
