Light in August and Red Poppies are one of well-known works at home and abroad.Although the two writers are from different countries,and their works are set in different background,they take their own hometown as their writing backgrounds and employ polyphony to convey the nostalgia about traditional culture.Polyphony,one type of narrative technique is the key to success for the two works,because it can achieve strong rhetorical effect on the text and is closely related to cultureThe thesis takes Light in August and Red Poppies as the research object.By means of comparative method,the thesis selects the discourses endowed with polyphonic features are collected to analyze the relationship between polyphony and culture.The polyphonic features of the two novels are discussed from three perspectives:the dialogical structure,the unfinalizability and carnivalistic scenes of the two novels.On this basis,the the rhetorical effect of polyphony in the two novels is discussed.The polyphony makes the two novels full of contradictory and conflicted consciousness,which truthfully reveals the sharp contradiction of the social reality.The polyphony in the novels has a close tie with a certain cultural background.Thus,the cultural reasons of polyphony in the two novels through the comparative study on the period of Faulkner and Alai as well as the two writer's personal experience are discussed.Meanwhile,the cultural theme is reflected with the help of polyphony.With the development of human civilization,the long-standing culture and fine tradition is gradually fading.In the two novels,the use of fully express the pursuit of cultural identity in society.The polyphony endows the two novels with humanism,which mirrors the two writers' concern about the survival and development of human.It is found that polyphony interacts with culture through the study on the relation between polyphony and culture in the two novels.Though Alai and Faulkner are from different countries and different periods,they share same feeling and concern about traditional culture and human.In the different times and society,people suffer from similar spiritual crisis.The pursuit of cultural identity is an eternal subject for human.
