As a kind of special lexical phenomenon, reduplicated words exist widely both in Chinese and English. However, there are great differences between reduplicated words in English and those in Chinese, therefore, the translation of reduplicated words has aroused the attention of translation scholars. However, few studies on the translation of reduplicated words in modern Chinese essays can be found. The extensive use of reduplicated words enriches the aesthetic value of essays. The reduplicated words in Chinese integrate sound, form and sense into a unity, which greatly improves the effect of expression and artistic appeal of essays Therefore,it is worthwhile to study the English translation of reduplicated words in Chinese essays.Xu Yuanchong's Three-Beauty Principle, namely, beauty in sense, beauty insound and beauty in form,is regarded as the criterion for poetry translation, especially for the translation of classical Chinese poetry."Beauty in sense" means that the translated text should convey the deep meaning of the original."Beauty in sound" refers to the reproduction of the phonological beauty of the original."Beauty in form" means retaining the structural features of the original.Xu Yuanchong also points out the different importance of beauty and proposes that beauty in sense is primary with beauty in sound ranking second and beauty in form in the third place.Based on Three-Beauty Principle, this thesis conducts a detailed study of translation of reduplicated words taken from Selected Modern Chinese Essays. It mainly involves the translation of reduplicated words and the aesthetic effects reproduced in English translation. In this thesis, literature research method, statistical method and comparative analysis are used in the data analysis. The findings of this research are:firstly,"beauty in sense" of reduplicated words can be retained through equivalence, conversion,"ing" structure and simile;"beauty in sound" can be achieved through onomatopoeia, alliteration and rhyme;"beauty in form" can be reproduced through repetition and parallelism.Secondly,in English translation of essays, the degree of reproducing beauty in sense of reduplicated words is the highest, beauty in sound comes second and beauty in form has the lowest degree of reproduction. The degree of beauty reproduction of reduplicated words in essays is relatively low on the whole.Although there are language differences between English and Chinese, the translator can utilize a variety of means to reproduce the beauty in sense and beauty in sound to the greatest extent, and retain the beauty in form as much as possible. The research is expected to contribute to translation practice and provide the study of translation of reduplicated words in modern Chinese essays with a new research perspective.
