Fuzziness is the basic characteristic of human natural language. Any kind of language has the characteristic of fuzziness whether it is spoken language or written language. Fuzzy language refers to the fuzziness exists in language in a broad sense. While in a narrow sense, it refers to the specific fuzzy words or expressions. In literary works, especially in Chinese literary works, fuzzy language is more frequently used due to the particular pragmatic and aesthetic needs.Essay, sharing the juxtaposition of poetry, fiction and drama, is one of the four important literary genres. Chinese essays have several thousand years of history as well as extremely high aesthetic value. However, compared with other literary genres, the researches on the translation of essays by domestic scholars are still not profound enough, especially that on modern Chinese essays translation. The Selected Modern Chinese Essays (four volumes in total) translated by Professor Zhang Peiji contains basically all the representative works created by the outstanding young intellectuals after the May Fourth Movement, which has been well received by the translation circles in the world. It not only provides a rich reference for Chinese translation researchers but also provides abundant materials for western scholars to understand Chinese historical culture. So, it is definitely worth exploring. The thesis will conduct the case study on the basis of the textual analysis of The Selected Modern Chinese Essays. As a new discipline with the combination of translation and aesthetics, translation aesthetics mainly focuses on the representation in literay translation. It aims at helping the translators understand the general rules in the process of aesthetic representation and then create the translated versions with high aesthetic value. Liu Miqing's theory of translation aesthetics specifically divides the meaning hierarchy into three levels, and lays great emphasis on the role of context and imagination in translation process, which provides a good perspective for the research on the translation of fuzzy language in literary works.Fuzzy language in The Selected Modern Chinese Essays can be classified into three aspects:fuzzy language at linguistic level, including numerals, fuzzy hedges and continuum; fuzzy language at rhetorical level, including simile, metaphor, personification and parallel; fuzzy language at cultural level, including culture-bound words or expressions, and expressions about historical and religious culture; fuzzy language at aesthetic level, including reduplicated words, words, four-character expressions and rhetoric devices. According to Liu Miqing's translation aesthetics, there are three levels of meaning hierarchy, those are, the ontological level of meaning, the social level of meaning, and the functional level of meaning. Taking the volume ? and volume ? of The Selected Modern Chinese Essays as the research objects, the thesis tries to analyze the handling situation of fuzzy language on the three levels of meaning hierarchy, and summarize the translation methods adopted by the translator from the perspective of Liu Miqing's translation aesthetics, further exploring the inspirations brought by translation aesthetics on the translation of fuzzy language in The Selected Modern Chinese Essays. The thesis reaches a conclusion that the specific classification of meaning hierarchy on different levels provides a beneficial reference for the translator to comprehend and represent the implication of fuzzy language in translation process. Meanwhile, flexible methods should be adopted when representing fuzzy language on different levels of meaning hierarchy. Moreover, context and imagination play a significant role in the process of fuzzy language translation. The research of the thesis shows that Liu Miqing's translation aesthetics has a great guiding function for the translation of fuzzy language in modern Chinese essays.
