A Report On The Translation Of Chapters 1 And 2 Of The Judicial System Of England And Wales:A Visitor's Guide

This is a report on the translation of Chapters 1 and 2 of The Judicial System of England and Wales: A Visitor's Guide,a legal reader published by the International Team of the Judicial Office of Britain on May 31,2016.The Guide is designed for foreign visitors,especially judges from other countries,to inform them of general knowledge about the judicial system of England and Wales.The translation report describes the translation project and translation process,and sums up three typical problems arising from the translation practice,the issue of extra-linguistic knowledge,the problem of term translation as well as long sentence translation.Solutions to each of the problems are reported by stating how the translator has applied translation principles and skills to the translation practice.For the issue of extra-linguistic knowledge,the report proposes that it is quite important to acquire knowledge and collect information widely both before and during translation,because being well-informed is supposed to be an ideal way to tackle the problem concerning knowledge.For the issue of term translation,the report puts forward the translation principles of accuracy,fluency and consistency,coupled with the skills of literal translation,free translation and transliteration.For the problem of long sentence translation,the principles of faithfulness,expressiveness and closeness,and the skills of syntactic linearity,reversion,division and synthesis are proposed to achieve an accurate and natural translation.This report is not only a summary of the author's translation experience gained by doing the translation project,it may also provide reference for other translators who are confronted with similar problems in their translation practice.
