There is a dominant interpretation of the framework in many of the descriptions of modern Chinese literature: it is less concerned about the late Qing Dynasty translation of literature,or just to see it as a mess of ancient literature and a "May Fourth" literary opponent in the position of the May Fourth Literature,as well as inadequately sorted out and summarized this literary phenomenon.As a large-scale translation activities in the late Qing Dynasty,especially a large number of detective novels on the translation,it actually presents a more complex appearance when face opposites and contradiction between impact and response,modern and tradition,innovation and conservatism.Therefore,we should give enough attention to re-examine the foreign detective novels in China's development and evolvement.This paper selects the most popular translation——Sherlock Holmes series of detective stories as the main object of study,and tries to comprehensively investigate the translation of detective novels in the historical and cultural perspective at that time.Among them,this paper focus on the cultural space which detective novels occurr and progress,and the detective novels's purpose and translation strategies when it acts a cross-cultural transmission,as well as the cultural influence of translating detective novels.By grasping these propositions,the complexity and the multiple meaning of translating detective novels are presented.These paper consists of four chapters.Preface sorts and generalizes present situation of study associated with Sherlock Holmes series of detective stories in the late Qing Dynasty,and then confirms the main research questions and methods.The first part is an elaboration about the rise of detective novels based on Sherlock Holmes series,including background, reason, grand occasion.The second part starts from the cultural level, and explores the translation strategies adopted by this series of translated novels under the constraints of cultural consciousness.The third part is a discovery and analysis of historical significance for this series of detective novels.
