With the rapid changes in society,the foreign cultures was spreading more frequently from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China.The most intuitive manifestation is that a large number of foreign fictions has been introduced,especially the translation of detective fictions.Detective fiction is the most frequently translated category of foreign fiction,also it's the only genre that took root in China.This paper mainly discusses the gradual process of that from the translation of foreign detective fictions to the emergence of Chinese original detective stories and becomes a literary genre during the Republic of China.The gradual maturity of the translation of foreign detective stories has inspired Chinese writers to imitate and create detective stories,which is the embryonic stage of Chinese original detective stories.The imitation of the step by step deepened,the Hawthorne series of detective novels appeared,and the Chinese original detective novels gradually matured.Although there are traces of imitation,but with ethnic characteristics,it began to form its own unique style.The occurrence of Chinese original detective novels is not achieved overnight,but through a long period of accumulation and gradual change,which reflects the modernization of Chinese literature.In addition,in the process of translation and creation of detective stories,new ideas such as freedom,democracy and rule of law have begun to spread.This article consists of an introduction and three chapters.In the introduction part,the concept of detective novels is first defined,and the emergence and development of detective novels are summarized.Secondly,the main content of this paper is summarized.It also briefly describes the research status of detective novels in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,including the research situation of translation detective novels and the research situation of Chinese original detective novels.Finally,the necessary explanations are given for the value and significance of the topic.The first chapter mainly introduces the translation and introduction of foreign detective stories,the introduction and development of foreign detective stories,the changes in the content of foreign detective stories during this period,and the influence of external factors on the content of detective stories in translation.It is mainly analyzed from translation,dissemination and acceptance aspectsThe second chapter mainly introduces the embryonic stage of Chinese original detective stories,including the reasons and characteristics of detective fiction.During the embryonic stage of Chinese original detective fiction,it is influenced by detective fiction and traditional Chinese public case fiction,and its specific characteristics and limitations.The influence of external environment factors on novel creation in the process of development.The third chapter explores the generation of Chinese detective fiction genres.This chapter mainly introduces the Hawthorne series of Cheng Xiaoqing,the symbol of the generation of Chinese detective fiction genre,also it represents the highest achievement of Chinese original detective fiction in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.This paper analyses the characteristics of Hawthorne's detective stories:drawing lessons from foreign detective stories,improving Chinese original detective stories and applying Chinese elements.By probing into the symbolic significance of Hawthorne's series of detective stories,it explains how Hawthorne's series became the symbol of original detective stories in late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China.
