In 1981,Peter Newmark proposed two translation methods.They are called as Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation.Movie title translation belongs to communicative translation.Produced by the American Chinese writer Jean Ma,Sounding the Modern Woman——the Songstress in Chinese Cinema describes the history of cinema during the sound cinema period.Jean Ma shows how they become well-known stars in this book.To some degree,this proves the changing roles of modern women in urban cities.Ma informs readers about the excellent performers in Chinese movie area through film history,such as Zhou Xuan and Grace Chang.Based on the theory related to communicative translation and the translation practice,this thesis made a conclusion that an impressive movie title translation should be maintained informative,aesthetic and commercial in balance.With many title translations occurred in Chapter 3 as examples,the paper analyzes the characteristics of movie titles between China and the west.Based on those characteristics,this paper draws on some specific examples to illustrate.
