Rohinton Mistry is a contemporary Indo-Canadian writer and he is also one of the most dynamic writers among Indian English writers.A Fine Balance is his second novel and it has been praised by readers since it is published.It focuses on the Indian subaltern and make a thorough analysis on the subaltern's survival state and mental outlook.Rohinton Mistry' s subaltern narrative not only depicts the turbulent situation in India and the daily lives of ordinary people,but also explores existential experienc of all mankind living with sufferings.The thesis is divided into five parts.The first part is “Introduction”,to reveal the domestic and foreign research on Rohinton Mistry.Besides,it analyzes the concept of subaltern narrative and writing ideas and methods of the thesis.The first chapter mainly discusses the multiple thematic meanings and it includes the social environment life and experiernce of the subaltern.The second chapter concerns on the narrative strategies.Rohinton Mistry's subaltern narrative has both multiple thematic meanings and aesthetic qualities.The sudden change of plots,writing the grief with the joy,the narrative rhythm,the narrative features of traditional realism and the modern narrative element shows the rich aesthetic connotation of the work.The third chapter explores the causes,value and problems of the subaltern narrative.The author's subaltern narrative comes from his own life experience and understanding towards the social reality of India.The novel stimulates people to change the current situation.Of course,the author's narrative maybe walk between reality and fiction.Conclusion summarizes the whole thesis.“Literature is the study of man.” Writers' analysis of human nature and affectionate compassion towards the subaltern evoke every reader to care for individual life situation and living experience.
