A Report On The C-E Translation Of The Story Of Wenchang Culture

Chinese culture has always been extensive and profound.In recent years,as the Belt and Road Initiative has been put forward and promoted,the “going out” of Chinese culture also encounters a good opportunity.The author has the honor to attend the Chinese-English translation of The Story of Wenchang Culture,one of the “Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture Translation Projects”,and accordingly makes this report.The Story of Wenchang Culture is the folktales about the ancestor of “Wenchang Culture”— Emperor Wenchang.Taking stories as a carrier,the source text reflects the moral standard and spiritual connotation—“loyalty,filial piety,esteem and belief” advocated in Wenchang culture.Therefore,its English translation can help western readers understand Wenchang culture,which will be conductive to the spread of Chinese traditional culture.However,there are many cultural vocabularies and cultural background knowledge in the text,which cannot be understood by western readers and thereby causes the phenomena of cultural defaults,and brings a great challenge for the translator.There are mainly six parts in this translation practice report: Introduction includes the background,requirements and significance of the project;translation preparation consists of analysis of the source text,and its textual features and reference collections;the third part elaborates the cultural default phenomenon under functional equivalence and the relevant compensation strategies for cultural defaults;the fourth chapter is the core part of this report,in which the author analyses the culture-loaded vocabularies and sentences in the text and then make intratextual compensation or extratextual compensation for them through translation methods,including literal translation plus annotation,free translation,and transliteration plus annotation as well as omission,based on the phenomena of cultural default in translation,so as to ensure the smooth cultural communication;the fifth part is about the evaluation of the project;and finally,the author makes a summary to the report.
