In literary translation, retranslation is not uncommon, especially in translation of literary classics. It mainly consists of four types, including intermediate translation, back translation,multi-translations by various translators, and retranslation of the same work by the same translator. The study in this paper mainly goes to the last type.Since the 1980s,the translators in China has been keen on the retranslation of literary classics. Many classics even have dozens of translations. However, most of domestic research mainly goes to the third type, but few on the last one.Based on the 1979 version and 2002 version of Hulanhe Zhuan translated by Howard Goldblatt, this paper attempts to make a comparative analysis on lexical, syntactical and textual level in light of Nida's dynamic equivalence theory.By doing this, the author hopes to reveal the importance of retranslation by the same translator, and provide references for the development of retranslation.Hulanhe Zhuan, one of the most important treasures in China's literary history,is the representative work of Xiao Hong,a famous Chinese writer. As a matter of fact, this literary work began to go towards the international market, when Howard Goldbaltt,an American famous sinologist and translator, translated it into English in 1979.But in this version Goldblatt mainly adopted the method of literal translation, which failed to reproduce the beauty of the original. Then in 1988,Tales of Hulanhe River was reissued with minor changes. In 2002,Howard Goldblatt translated this meaningful novel again.By comparison, this version made many improvements. On lexical level,Goldblatt replaced many outdated, incorrect or colorless words, and simplified many redundant expressions. On syntactic level,he adjusted the punctuation, restructured sentences as well as changed many English expressions. On textual level,he greatly improved the use of cohesive devices and colloquial conversations, and dug more into the deep meaning of the expressions.
