A Report On The Translation Of The Sunset Limited

This paper is based on the translation of The Sunset Limited written by Cormac McCarthy,one of the most prestigious writers in America.Unlike traditional drama full of clothing,lighting and other elements involved,it differs in only two characters referred to as White and Black who keep talking from the very beginning to the end.This not only increases the difficulty of performances on the stage,but also brings difficulties to translation.The dialogue in the drama is of core issues in the source text.How to translate the dialogue to reproduce the character in the target text and reflect the profound philosophy of the original author become the key point of this translation practice.This paper,from the perspective of unnatural narrative and translator behavior criticism,explores the strategies and methods of dialogues in drama translation.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter one gives a brief account of the author's life,his creations of dramas and the source text selected.The second chapter discusses translation preparations,including relevant studies on the writer and theoretical overviews of drama translation.The third chapter introduces the theoretical basis of this translation practice,namely,the theory of unnatural narrative combined with translator behavior criticism.Chapter four is the case study which demonstrates that translators' proper choices and behavior about how to deal with the phenomenon of unnatural narrative in the translation of dramatic texts and how to interpret dialogues between characters in dramas to achieve character reappearance.The fifth chapter is the reflection after translation,summarizing the major findings and limitations in the translation practice.
