| This translation report is written after translating the first three chapters of a novel with the title of Deceived by a Fox Once Again written by Shen Shixi.Compared with traditional animal novels,this translation material tells various moving stories about animals which act in many cases like human beings.The language in the source text is subtle and simple,embodying typical Chinese-style expressions.Guided by Translator Behavior Criticism,a theory that breaks binary opposition and takes both intra-translational and extra-translational behavior into consideration,the translator makes every effort to keep a balance between the reproduction of the original Chinese style and the acceptance of the target English readership.This report focuses on translation difficulties of idioms and other cultural-loaded words,repetition and short continuous clauses under Translator Behavior Criticism.In terms of cultural-loaded words.methods of transliteration and annotation are flexibly utilized to convey the Chinese culture without losing its original flavor and at the same time to ensure that the target text is intelligible.In handling original images in idioms,specific context is taken into account to decide whether to delete or retain them.What’s more,repetition either in form or meaning can often be met in the course of translation,thus we tend to adopt translation methods of substitution,conversions and abridgement to avoid redundancy and make the translation more readable.In addition,the author concludes that lowering clauses to phrase level,word order adjustment as well as splitting can be utilized with a view to providing reference for the translation of short continuous clauses.Benefiting a lot from this translation practice,the translator is able to make the following implications.Firstly,the theory of Translator Behavior Criticism can guide literary translation and offer possibilities for probing into methods and skills of Chinese-style expression translation.Secondly,it’s an ideal situation to keep balance between truth-seeking and utility-attaining in the course of translation,but it cannot always be realized.It’s necessary to grasp the integrity of the whole translation and adopt such translation methods as conversion,abridgement and lowering clauses to phrase level to polish translation.Thirdly,the translator should endeavor to make advantages of the common places of Chinese and English and attach importance to differences between them in the practice,so as to make communication bridges between Chinese and English,helping target readers understand the original meaning and style. |
