Carson McCullers is one of the most important American writers of the 20th century.She portrayed a number of refreshing mad characters in her works.These mad characters have both the external characteristics of the traditional mad man and the inherent meaning of the traditional mad man.To some extent,has its unique cultural significance and aesthetic meanings.Based on the existing research,this paper explores the deep implicature and spiritual pursuit of the mad characters in Carson McCullers's novels according to the theory of madness,combining with the biography,cultural criticism,close-reading and other related theories.Eventually trying to provide another angle of attempt and effort for the interpretation of McCullers's works.This peper is divided into four parts.The introduction mainly introduces the research acceptance status of Carson McCullers's works and the theoretical basis and significance of this paper,The first chapter refers to Foucault and Hegel's theory of madness and other related theories.The mad characters of Carson McCullers's works can be divided into two categories:the mad characters under the power relationship and the mad characters under the lust relationship.For the first kind of characters,they were subjected to the power of race,gender and state power of persecution,which rose to madness,but was crushed by a huge power machine.As for the second kind of characters,their morals and values are totally incompatible with society,so their identities are neither recongnized by its self nor recognized by the people,They can be placed in an awkward marginalized position.The second chapter begins with the creation and presentation of the mad characters,focusing on the physical signs of the mad character,namely grotesque appearance and sexual deviant.And elaborates on the influence of the abnormal space environment on the mad characters in the way of close reading.The third chapter,on the basis of the first two chapters,combined with the biography theory form the practical significance and aesthetic significance of Carson McCullers's works,and evaluated the writing value of the mad characters appropriately.In the conclusion,we will summarize and sublimate the subject of McCullers's novels as a whole,thus emphasizing the value of this paper.
