With the strengthening of the international cultural exchanges, and China's increasing cooperation with other countries on various aspects, more and more people choose to study abroad for splendid careers. To ensure this successful choice, we must pay more attention to the translation of the resume which is very important for those foreign universities. Over the past few years, there have been some researches on the English translation of resume and many translation companies provide the service for resume writing, editing and polishing. However, intensive researches on the application resume translation are insufficient and inadequate, which have weakened our understanding of high quality rendition of this type of texts and does no good to the ensurance of good translation. Taking this context into account, this thesis, based on my translation of the resume translation practice in the agency, attempts to apply the Relevance Theory to the analysis of the English translation of the Chinese application resume, aiming to find a workable theory to guide this kind of translation.This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the task description,specifying the background, contents, purpose and significance of the task. The second chapter addresses the theoretical framework which includes Relevance theory, the optimal relevance theory, principle and techniques for the resume translation under the principle of the optimal relevance. The third deals with the translation procedures which include preliminary preparation, working and testing after translation. The fourth is a case study, focusing on one specific example from the resume translation practice which is analyzed from the perspective of the optimal relevance in terms of translation methods and representing the meaning and style of the source text in the translated resume. The last chapter is a conclusion, summarizing the major findings, limitations and offering suggestions. It is found that the Chinese resume differs from that of English in style and the successful English translation of the Chinese resume is dependent on the flexible employment of such translation techniques as generalization, shift of perspective, literal and liberal translation so as to actualize the optimal relevance.
