The Nationwide Weekly was the official publication of the National Salvation Association.With the falling of Shanghai and Nanjing in December 1937 and the crisis of Chineses nation was even severer,the Kuomindang government was forced to move the capital to Wuhan.In order to save the country and promote the KMT to fight actively,Shen Junru and other patriots found the weekly in Hankou in the same year.After publishing for 30 volumes,it was merged with Risistance as Nationwide Resistance.The Nationwide Weekly was founded by Shen Junru,issued by Nationwide Weekly Press and distributed by Shenghuo Bookstore.Shen Junru was the president of press,Li Gongpu,Liu Shi,Qian Junduan,Zhang Zhirang,Wang Kunlun and Zhang Shenfu were editors while Li Gongpu was the publisher as well.They were the main leaders of the National Salvation Association.Within the KMT-controlled area,the weekly was not just a pubilicity carrier of the Communist Party of China but also a carrier for all parties to exchange oppions regarding anti-aggression of Japan.Communists such as Pan Zinian,Qian Junduan,Dong Weijian,Hu Sheng and Hou Wailu,KMT members such as Feng Yuxiang and celebrities such as Sheng Junru,Zhang Bojun,Zhang Shenfu all placed articles in it.Responsing to the call of era,they criticized the compromise and surrender policies of KMT authority,and started a nation-wide war to promote the process of anti-aggression of Japan.The weekly created columes like editorial,short reviews,weekly commentary,mailbox,Westminster Shorter Catechism,introductory of new books and A Taste of Half-month Journey.Focusing on politics,the Nationwide Weekly was rich in contents and had a profound influence.It emphasized the analysis of domestic and international situation and vigorously advocated heroic deeds of soldiers,appealing the Chinese nation to stick together,stop the civil war and against the Japanese aggression.At the same time,the weekly reflected the anti-aggression activities and plans of all social standings,motivated people to join the army and fight in the front,caring sufferings of those at the bottom and reported their living conditions.The Nationwide Weekly was aprogressive and comprehensive publication during the war of resistance against Japanese aggreission,and also an important publication of National Salvation Association.Its issuing did impact the establishent of anti-Japanese national united front.It had strengthened Chinses people determination to win the war,had promoted the development of democratic constitutionalism movement and had criticized the autocracy system.Now,the Nationwide Weekly is very valuable for historical value.It has been an important record for the study of National Salvation Association and democratic movements during the war of resisitance against Japanese aggression.
