"The Scholars" is an outstanding ironic novel in our country.The novel created a total of more than 380 various characters,in which there were more than 200 unimportant person,accounting for 52.6% of the total number of characters.The unimportant person in this article refer to proletarian or small producer,who widely existed in the bottom of society,suffered from oppression and exclusion of discrimination,unable to rank the upper class,whose spirit was also extremely depressed,in addition to imperial examinations,officials,wealthy children and salt merchants.As the unimportant person in the novel occupied a considerable proportion,there was important research value,this article chose unimportant person as the research object.According to the actual situation of the unimportant person in the novel,the article mainly studied from the aspects of the characters,the meaning of the text,the shaping characteristics and the literary status in the history of the novel.In "The Scholars",according to the identity attribution and characteristics,the unimportant person could be divided into four categories,they were workers,miraculous person,social freaks and snobbish villain.The specific characteristics of the workers was good,honest and self-reliant,miraculous person's outstanding features were skilled,contempt for fame,and social freaks were so obsessed with the imperial examinations that they could not extricate themselves,and snobbish villain sought power cravenly.There was a world of difference among the unimportant person,thus the role of the text in the works were also different,in general,workers and miraculous person belonged to the front character,who mainly set off the novel's theme that criticizing the drawbacks of the imperial examination system from the reverse,however,negative characters including social freaks and snobbish villain strengthened the theme of the novel from the front.In the meantime,unimportant person also played an important role in organizing the plot and structure of the novel.Some unimportant person cut off or delayed plots to satisfy narrative,some paved the way for the plot,and another acted as a clue to put together the plots to make the plot of the novel twists and turns,round through.The symmetrical relationship formed by unimportant person and their story,the plots of seeking virtuous persons about unimportant person,and the circular structure formed by the narration of the unimportant person,make a contribution to the structure of the novel.In addition to the function of deepening the theme and organizing the plot & structure,on creating image of figures,a number of unimportant person helped to realize other characters images from different sides,on the one hand,some mainly showed the spirit of other unimportant person through the contrast rendering,on the other hand,some make characters of imperial examination,official officials,wealthy children,salt merchants and other big characters more full by comparing against the background.In the characteristics of shaping related to unimportant person images,the setting of the unimportant person had a distinct temporality and spatiality.The article mainly showed a three-dimensional,multi-faceted drawing about unimportant person through the long time of development and the widespread distribution of space based on the dimension of time and space.On the one hand,narrative of more than two hundred and fifty years indicated the inevitable trend of feudal society to decline,adding the images of father and son,disclosed the truth fully that generation is not as good as the generation in society.On the other hand,the space narrative corresponding to the time,the unimportant person were widely distributed in 12 provinces,in other words,they almost covered half of China,and more concentrated in the southern region,especially the largest population density in Nanjing.At the same time,the living space of the unimportant person was not fixed,but in the state of the flow.What's more,the origin of some unimportant person's origin is meaningful.Comparing unimportant person's shaping techniquesto the important person in “The Scholars”,we could found that they both using before and after the echo and replenishment techniques,and the difference was manifested in the language and living environment of the characters.Wu Jingzi had a major breakthrough in the way of shaping the images of unimportant person,on the basis of shaping characters in other traditional novels.The literary value and status of a large number of unimportant person could not be ignored in the history of Chinese fiction.
