As a world-famous composer, pianist and conductor, Sergei Vassilievitch Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) is one of the greatest musicians in Russia at the turn of the 20th century. His musical works involve diversities, rich emotion, his creative works also have a profound foundation of national music, thus they are known as an indispensable chapter in the 20th century music history.Rachmaninoff's work Moments musicaux Op. 16 was finished from October to December in 1896. This early work is comprised of six musical pieces. It symbolized that his creation had move on to more matured aspects.The thesis can be divided into four chapters.In the first chapter, there is an introduction of Rachmanioff s whole life.His key works from three periods and the creation background of Moments musicaux Op. 16 are also be summarized in this chapter. In the second chapter,there is a brief analysis of the musical form structure of the forth piece of Moments musicaux Op. 16 No.4. The third and forth chapter are the key parts of this thesis. The research aimed at the playing techniques appearing in the works and the use of different pedals. Furthermore, the research also elaborates how the music is expressed in the works by analyzing the chapters.
