A Practice Report Based On Overtranslation And Undertranslation

Biography seems as an important part of literary genres;it enjoys its unique narrative perspective to describe character's life experience,personality,honest image,and historical things.The biography of celebrity enables people who read the book to know the character's life story and some related historical events.It would arouse a strong emotion on the readers and produce a huge impact on the society.The biography translation,especially the literary work about the foreign celebrity,shows both important historical and realistic value,great significance can be gathered in both of the language and the thought of biography itself.The report mainly focuses on the translation practice of president biography A Full Life to talk about the strategies of overtranslation and undertranslation in the biography translation.The whole report focuses on reporting the following five parts: In introduction part,the author generally finds the background of translation projects,and introduces source text and writer briefly.In the translation process part,it mainly has three parts of translation process.The author briefly introduces the overtranslation and undertranslation strategies of great translators at home and abroad,such as Eugene Nida,Lawrenee Venuti,Lu Xun,Fu Lei and Qian Zhongshu.In the part of the case of translation,the author mainly uses the overtranslation strategies in the translation of A Full Life.Based on those examples,the author also analyses the undertranslation atrategies in the translation,the methods are summarized clearly.Finally,the author makes a whole conclusion of this report,and gives some suggestions and translation experience in the process of biography translation.Through the translation practice of A Full Life,the author hopes to apply the overtranslation and undertranslation strategies into translation practice,deeply comprehend the strategies and improve author's translation practice level.In addition,the report is expected to offer a reference to other translators in translation activities.
