Empirical Study Of Washback Effect Of TEM4 On Students' English Learning Motivation

As a nationwide test,the profound influence brought about by TEM4 is undeniable.One of the influences is that TEM4 may influence students' learning motivation,which can be also translated as washback effect on students' learning motivation.Among many learner factors,motivation plays a role to determine the degree of achievement procured by students.Therefore,it is necessary to reveal the property and direction of washback effect of TEM4 on students' learning motivation,which will assist in teaching activities and offer suggestions to teachers.The present study adopts questionnaire survey and interview as research methodologies.The research subjects are third-year and fourth-year students specializing in English from several universities in Shanghai.The research purpose is to find out the mechanism that governs washback effect.After the research,it is found that TEM4 has washback effect on students' instrumental motivation,sense of achievement,self-confidence,language anxiety,course-specific motivation,and group-specific motivation.But no notable washback is discovered on integrative motivation and teacher-specific motivation.By virtue of this result,and based on some motivation strategies bibliography,six suggestions are proposed to English learning.At first,teachers are supposed to adjust teaching content to meet students' needs.Next,teachers ought to form a harmonious relationship with learners.Then,organizing certain kinds of activities in the class.Fourth,helping students build confidence and reducing student's excessive anxiety.Finally,enhancing students' self-learning ability.All these suggestions are meant to promote positive washback and reduce negative washback and promote learning motivation to ensure that teaching and learning activities are carried out smoothly.
