The Innovation And Limitation In The Music Composition Of Verbatim Theatre Musicals

As a branch of documentary theatre,verbatim theatre has been playing a more and more significant role in Western drama development for the last two decades.In this thesis paper,the dissertation starts by analyzing the very first verbatim theatre musical London Road,as well as musical pieces based on other found text contexts,in order to clarify the innovation and limitation of the musical composition techniques caused by oral expressions,and discuss the enlightenment of these techniques for Chinese original musicals.There are four chapters in this paper.In the frst Chapter,the author gives the basic definition and the way of creation of verbatim theatre,as well as the concrete presentations of contemporary works,in order to tell its history and significance of modern theatre.The second Chapter introduces the creation background of the musical London Road and the basic content and the relationships between the characters.In the third Chapter,the author concludes the general rules of its creation by analyzing the music composition techniques used in London Road in addition to compare with songs based on other found text content,and find out the similarities and differences of both processes.In the last Chapter,the author discusses the innovation and the limitation of verbatim theatre musicals and explains the enlightenment and significance of London Road in the light of the present situation of the development of Chinese Original musicals.
