This report originates from the practice at Verbatim Reporting Service of the UNfrom July1stto August30th,2013.A lot of translation work has been done on the speeches by the SecurityCouncil and the General Assembly. The content includes: Protection of Civiliansin Armed Conflict, Protection of Journalists in Armed Conflict, and Address byMr. Ralph E. Gonsalves, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, etc.By translating the speeches and comparing different revisions, the authorexplored the characteristics of the United Nations documents and their translationmethods. In particular, the author probed into the translation of long sentences.This report elaborates on the UN “Verbatim Reporting” internship, especiallyits long sentences translation, which is of significance for interpreting training.Examples are shared in this report with the aim for improving translation andinterpreting skills. The author also hopes to offer some useful information forMTI postgraduates who want to take the internship at the UN. Readers can havean overview of the UN verbatim intern’s daily work through reading this report.
