Mary E.Davis'Classic Chic:Music,Fashion and Modernism is an academic monograph exploring the relationship between music,fashion and Modernism.It focused on the ideological trends and artistic styles of European culture with Paris as the core from 1900 to 1925.The book consists of seven chapters,respectively concerned about the fashion designers Paul Poiret,Germaine Bongard,coco Chanel and fashion magazines La Gazette du bon ton,Vanity Fair,and Vogue.It describes in detail about close relationship and mutual effect between music modernism and fashion magazine,couture designer,all kinds of artists.The interactions between music modernism and other artistic classes has been the focus of academia,however,For Fashion,this special field,the significance of it has been largely ignored in interdisciplinary modernist studies.There is no doubt that Davis's Classical Chic:Music,Fashion and Modernism compensate this omission greatly.By the rich historical data and the interpretation of these materials,the author proves that the "fashion kingdom" and artistic ideological trends in the upper class have an extremely important effect in promoting the formation and development of music modernism.The unique perspective and personalized culture interpretation presented in the academic monograph prompt people to think again the cultural atmosphere of music modernism which is formed at the beginning of twentieth Century,and also the historical significance and cultural connotation of multi art-disciplines interpenetrating and developing.The book review mainly deals with four aspects of the book:what is Fashion?the relationship between Fashion and Music modernism,writing features and critical judgment about the book content and writings,reaserch situation both at home and abroad.At last,the translator briefly demonstrates some personal opinions about the translation of academic writings and relevant matters.
