A Report On The Chinese-english Translation Of Non-subject Sentences In Safety Management Operation Notices

This report is a Chinese-English translation project about Safety Management Operation Notices,which is one of the Safety Management System documents in XXX Salvage Company.The whole translation project has a considerable scale of translation of which the author translated more than 15,000 Chinese characters.The English version is used for providing its staff with the specifications and directions of relative maritime salvage operations.In addition,it will be an important item in both internal and external audits.Since the two languages,Chinese and English,have great differences in the way of thought patterns and syntactic structures,there are a lot of non-subject sentences existing in the source text while they are seldom used in English texts except imperative sentences,which may cause difficulty in the translation of these sentences.Based on Skopos Theory put forward by Vermeer,more emphasis is put on the translation strategies of the non-subject sentences in Safety Management Operation Notices.By case analysis and summary of translation experience,six strategies are adopted when translating those sentences into Chinese:using imperative sentences,translating into passive voice,applying formal subject "it",transforming the non-subject elements into subjects,using "there be" sentences and adding proper subject.This translation task not only has strong practicability and demand,but also can provide some references for the future translation of the non-subject sentences in maritime SMS documents.
