A Contrastive Study On Translation Of Culture-loaded Words In Two English Versions Of Luotuo Xiangzi From The Perspective Of Schema Theory

Translation is the bridge in the international transmission of culture,and translators are the engineers to design the bridge,and directly affect the spread of culture.In the process of translation,translators are often influenced by their schemata.In this sense,translation is the product of mutual interaction of schemata between the original language and target language.Schema theory belongs to the branch of cognitive psychology,and many scholars use it in the field of translation at home and abroad in recent years so as to deal with cognitive differences in translation.Luotuo Xiangzi is one of the masterpieces of Lao She.In this novel,the words of distinctive cultural characteristics are used.Nida makes a detailed classification and interpretation on the translation of culture-loaded words,and divides it into five categories.Nida states that the translator should take suitable methods to translate these words based on their different categories.On this basis,a contrastive study of the translation of culture-loaded words is conducted in the light of content schema,linguistic schema,and formal schema.There are four English versions of Luotuo Xiangzi.The thesis explores the influence of different schemata on the translators' translation process,so Shi Xiaojing's(China)and Howard Goldblatt's(USA)versions are regarded as the research object.Although much research work on the English translation of Luotuo Xiangzi has been done,little work has been undertaken in the study of culture-loaded words translation.Researchers mainly center on the translation strategies in Evan King's and Shi Xiaojing's versions,and they prefer to choose the theoretical frameworks of eco-translatology,skopos theory etc.As for the study on the translation of culture-loaded words in Luotuo Xiangzi from the perspective of schema theory,few research papers have been published.Contrastive analysis and qualitative analysis will be utilized in the thesis.As culture-loaded words have their unique and rich cultural connotations,the translators' versions affect the cultural output.This thesis makes a detailed contrastive analysis of the translators' translations from the three aspects of schema theory.It aims to promote the translation of culture-loaded words.
