Doris Lessing is one of the greatest female writers in England. The Golden Notebook is her masterpiece which won the Nobel Prize in literature in 2007. She portrays a modern female in pursuit of freedom in the modern society in this novel, and clearly conveys her feminist ideas. The thesis aims to interpret the development of the protagonist Anna's consciousness of freedom from the feminist perspective—from the initial arrogant and self-indulgent free life,to the awakening after the frustration of disillusionment, and finally to the transformation into a truly free woman through the harmonious relationship with men and society. Like the other free women in modern society, Anna is faced with many kinds of predicaments. She loses confidence and inspiration for writing, feels depressed and unappreciated in politics and becomes menial in love. But through introspection, awakening, and the endeavor to change herself, Anna succeeds in getting out of the predicaments, gains new insight into the freedom of women, and secures true equality and freedom while getting along equally and harmoniously with men. The world is not perfect, but men and women can make joint efforts to build a better world.
