Frank Chin,the recognized godfather figure in the Chinese/Asian American literary arena,owns his status not only by his success on creating the first Chinese/Asian American drama in the early 1970s but also coediting Asian American literary anthology which bears the significance of manifesto,moreover,by his lifelong writing and practice,for safeguarding ethnic Chinese's benefit,he firmly fights against the racial discrimination and cultural bias on ethnic stereotype and strategy of assimilation from the mainstream society,and forges ahead to construct and display cultural history view and literary tradition of the Chinese/Asian American consciously.In this sense,his writings can be defined as a flag of the ethical literature as well as an interpretation of the ethnical ethics.Donald duk not only retains Frank Chin's consistent ethical concern but also embodies thick color of Chinese heroic culture owing to his culture turn.Furthermore,because it is Chin's latest designed full-length novel,the organic combination of the ethic connotation and the factors of Chinese hero culture will undoubtedly entail more sophisticated Chinese American heroic ethical writing.The writing that reflects Chin's cultural introspection and invariable affection are still in expectation of systematic analysis,which is alike what the essay aims to do.This essay intends to interpret and analyze the heroic ethical writing in Donald Duk by the means of ethical criticism,cultural criticism and close reading incorporating with specific textual content,intending to acquire relatively deep understanding of the unique and conclusive literary phenomenon along with writer's ethical ideas and writing philosophy.The essay is divided into four parts.In the introduction part,while briefing Frank Chin's life and overview of his writings,I intentionally identify his ethnic literary mind and ethical quality of ethnic inwardly,then review the domestic and overseas research status of Donald Duk and summarize the textual research significance.In the first chapter,in the context of the novel's Chinese culture,via analyzing what ethical instructions the protagonist once be taught and related cultural origin,I unveil that Chinese American heroic ethic connotes three aspects:new chivalry which takes on heroic rationality,new faithfulness which means the fidelity to ethnic groups,new destiny that promotes civil right;the next chapter I focus on the novel's ethical knots,i.e.the ethnic theme:ethnic image,ethnic identity and ethnic orientation which is the abiding preoccupation of Frank Chin,reveals the novel's Chinese American heroic ethical writing is the sublimation of writer's ethnic ethical writing because it furnishes us the masculine nature in daily life and culture,the sentiment of concerning the common people melting into the west of American and Chinatown,and the successive right ethnic path.The third chapter focuses on ethnic identity concerned by both ethical line and ethical knots,confirm that this type of writing can enlighten the consciousness of ethnic discourse power and spur the ideological revelation and meaning of ethnic historic sensibility while addressing the novel's related ethical narrative;in the conclusion part,after reviewing other scholars" assessments of the ethic writing and the writer's overall creative ideas,I distill the purport as the pursuit of the ethnic culture and ethnic personal integrity,finally evaluate the writer's cultural personality and ethnic feelings and his contributions to the American literature.
