Asian/Chinese American literature and literary criticism gradually became a prosperous and perspective researching area. With the publication of Columbia Anthology of American Literature (1988), Asian/Chinese American literature has been regarded as an inseparable section of the American literature. Fran Chin, a fifth-generation Chinese American writer is supposed to be an important author in nowadays Asian/Chinese American literature and literary criticism. He has been recognized as the blazer for Asian/Chinese American literature for he's done a great amount of contribution to explore and set up this new subject.Frank Chin is an expert at literary criticism. In 1991, he published his first novel Donald Duk for expressing his viewpoints more clearly. Frank Chin condemns the white supremacy and various racial prejudice with his anti-oppression works, cynical language and the unique Chinese American culture.With the help of related Post-colonialism theories and historic facts, various problems under the Post-colonialism context will be extensively discussed and researched. This dissertation is consisted of three parts:Part I Brief Introduction to the history of Chinese Emigrants to United States, the emergence and development of Chinese American Literature, Donald Duk and its auther Frank ChinPart II Analysis of the novel and its characters with Post-colonialism theory. The concerned concepts of Otherness and Identity/Identification are stated. Characterization analysis research will be included.Part III Conclusion. Recognition of the Identity and analysis of characterization will help the Chinese Americans to protect their Chinese cultural heritage, move out of the racial prejudice problems, comfortably cooperated into the American society.
