Since the concepts about metacognitive strategy have been introduced into applied linguistics, the related studies on how to cultivate learners' autonomous learning motivation through the awareness of metacognitive strategies have been the hot topics in Chinese education field. However, many researches about the correlation between autonomous learning motivation and metacognitive strategies have mainly focused on public universities while there are fewer studies at private college, which has been an important component of higher education in China. Many students at private college are enrolled at private college after failure in the national entrance examination. Therefore, their English level are relatively lower, which leads to many difficulties in their English learning,so it is necessary to pay attention to the cultivation of autonomous learning motivation of English and metacognitive strategies for students at private college. This study focuses on the correlation between Non-English majors' autonomous learning motivation of English and metacognitive strategies at private college. The research questions are:(1)What is the overall tendency of Non-English majors' autonomous learning motivation of English at private college?(2)What is the application of metacognitive strategy used by the Non-English majors at private college?(3)What is the correlation between autonomous learning motivation of English and metacognitive strategy for the Non-English majors at private college? This study is an empirical research by using questionnaires,non-structured interviews and other related data collection instruments. Both quantitative and qualitative analysis have been applied to.The research subjects is the sophomore majoring in accounting from a private college of Shaanxi province. The questionnaires(based on Likert 5-point scale)have been delivered according to the class. Then the non-structured interviews have been carried out. Then, the Pearson correlation analysis based on the data collected from questionnaires has been conducted by the SPSS 19.0 to analyze whether there are correlations between thevarious samples. To verify the effectiveness of metacognitive strategies for the Non-English majors' autonomous learning motivation of English,a metacognitive strategy training is made by selecting the experimental class and comparison class according to students' last term's scores respectively. After a semester's training, the independent sample T test(a way to compare the significance between two variables)is used to analyze the data gained from the language proficiency test to verify that metacognitive strategies benefits Non-English majors' autonomous learning motivation of English. The research results show:(1)Non-English majors at private college have weak motivation in autonomous English learning;(2)Non-English majors at private college have a relatively poor ability of metacognitive strategy application;(3)There exists a correlation between Non-English majors' autonomous learning motivation of English and metacognitive strategies and there is a continuum existing in students' English learning motivation, the more learning autonomy, the more higher application of metacognitive strategies. Therefore,it is an effective approach to internalize Non-English majors' autonomous learning motivation of English and construct better understanding and application of metacognitive strategies for private students' English learning.
