| Chinese American literature has been experiencing great changes from 1980 s until today,gradually changing from the periphery to the mainstream,at the same time,marching towards the mature and prosperous stage.In the process of promoting the development of Chinese American literature,Chinese American female writers have been regarded as a kind of important strength which can not be ignored.Amy Tan is just an influential representative among them.After creating her masterpiece The Joy Luck Club,The Kitchen God’s Wife is another excellent novel,which has remained her consistent narrating style and emotional theme.This thesis is aimed at looking into the connotation,form and implication of Chinese American Female literature through the analysis of “motherland” and “mother love”.Chinese American women try to seek their lost “mother love” with the help of relying on the mirror of “motherland”;meanwhile,they break the silence,constantly pursue their identities,even manage to set up the ethnic identity and cultural property in the mainstream of American culture,finally arriving at the spiritual destination and accomplishing the pursuit of life.This paper can be classified into four chapters.The first chapter interprets the connotation of “motherland” and makes a thorough exploration into the detailed expressions of “motherland”.The second chapter focuses on the exploration of “motherland” and “mother love”.Firstly,it makes interpretation of the connotation of the link between “mother love” and “motherland”,and then it explains the drifters’ emotion and sadness of losing the reliance of mother love on the basis of details in the novel.The third chapter mainly demonstrates “motherland” and “mother love” reflected from characters in the novel from different perspectives and angles,employing the research method of image study in the comparative literature.The last chapter stretches the study of the image of “motherland” and “mother love” to the discussion of the theme of “travelling faraway” and “returning” in the Chinese American Female writers’ literary works.In the first place,it explains the cultural implication of “travelling faraway”,and then it connects “travelling faraway” to “returning”.In Amy Tan’s novel,looking back at the Chinese culture is just a kind of meditation and pursuit of motherland and the origin of life.At the same time,she is seeking a spiritual home and in the multi-cultural context,trying to establish a platform where western and eastern cultures can be better communicated,understood and melted.Through discussing the meaning of images of “motherland” and “mother love”,the thesis further elaborates the two images’ cultural value and aesthetic value in the novel The Kitchen God’s Wife. |
