Since the reform and opening up of China,especially after the period of 1990 s,western philosophy and social science works have been widely introduced to China.Thus a large translation market is formed.The transmission and influence of social science works requires high-quality translation.Under the guidance of Schram's mass communication process model,this thesis tries to analyze the features of social science works,conclude the difficulties translators may come across and explore the solutions instancing by the translation of the first chapter of All the Single Ladies:Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation.This translation report covers five chapters.For the first chapter,the background information and the practical meanings of this translation task are introduced.For the second one,analysis on the content and features of the source text is presented.The third chapter describes the whole process of the translation,including pre-stage,during-stage and post-stage of translating.The fourth chapter is the core of this thesis.In this chapter a brief introduction is given on the guided theory of this translation report: Schram's mass communication process model.After analyzing the process and purpose of translation based on this theory,conclusions are drawn: firstly,translation is an action of mass communication;secondly,the purpose of translation is to search for the biggest common space in mutual understanding between writers and readers.Under the guidance of this theory and the features of social science works,translation strategies have been put forward: omission of verbal adjuncts,semantic adaptation of metaphoric words and information supplement of cultural words,on the lexical level;four steps to translate long sentences: division of sense groups,turning sense groups into sentences,reconstructing sense groups logically,and then dealing with cohesion,on the sentence level;cohesive devices of social science works,on the passage level.The last chapter is the summary of the experience from the whole translating practice,as well as the problems still existing.The practical significance lies in the exploration of new and practical strategies of the translation of social science works.At the mean time,the translation of the firstchapter of All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation intends to provide western materials for domestic scholars studying on the phenomenon of single ladies.
