Junot Diaz,a Dominican American writer,is a heavyweight figure in American contemporary immigration literature. His collection of short stories This Is How You Lose Her is a masterpiece following up Drown which established Diaz’s reputation and The Brief Wondrous of Oscar Wao,a Pulitzer winner. The book recounts love and marriage stories of the main character Yunior and his brother Rafa,Dominican immigrants living in the States. It continues the exploration of the same themes as those in Diaz’s previous works: diaspora, identity and racial discrimination. This thesis employs cultural study theory to reveal the existence state of Latino Americans, uses diaspora theory to explain how those Latinos, struggling for survival, have lost their original identities in the process of shaping their new identities in America. This thesis also explores immigrants’ love and marriage relationships, racial discrimination they experience and discriminations among the different minority people in the States. This thesis differs itself from others in that the previous studies are largely dedicated to sentimental confusion, shock value of language, distress life of immigrants, whereas this thesis focuses more on the influence of diaspora penetrating identity, love and marriage and racial discrimination. It demonstrates the waking-up effect of Diaz’s works for Latino immigrants so as to help them make their self-fulfillment and self-improvement in US society.
