Junot Diaz is one of the most distinguished Latino-American writers. His masterpiece,The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,has won him the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction since its publication in 2007.Taking the history of the Dominican Republic as the background, the novel tells the story of the Dominican American boy Oscar and his family. As a Latin American writer,Diaz inherited magic realism and employed the magic techniques to reflect the reality of the Dominican nation. The thesis makes a detailed study of the magic realism in the novel and points out that the novel is not only a typical magic realistic text, but also a masterpiece that profoundly reflects the harsh reality of the Dominican nation. The main body of the thesis contains three parts:Chapter one attaches importance to the magical elements presented in the novel, including magical plots, characters, narrative techniques and symbolic images. Then the thesis focuses on the reality factors, revealing the colonial invasion, dictatorship, racial discrimination, and marginalization experienced by the Dominican nation. In the end,by comparing with Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, the thesis analyzes the adaption of Diaz’s magic realism.Diaz lives in different time and environment, and he has a unique immigration experience. Therefore, his magic realism combines the new elements of the times and cultural factors based on inheritance.
