News medium has been one of the major means to convey information,which has received more and more attention from the masses.However,being affected by ideologies and social power,the objective of news report raised critical comments among readers and critical discourse analysts.As an important means of spreading sports spirit,news report has become a critical medium for the sports enthusiasts to get information about great sport events.Such kind of news reports also includes perceivably a certain kind of ideologies and preferences,which require critical analysis in reading.In recent years,as an inadequate branch of Modern Linguistics,Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)has been employed to describe and analyze various discourses and figure out the complex relation between language and social context.With the popularity of Critical Discourse Analysis,news discourse attracts greater attention from the linguistic learners.Due to the key function in news discourse,speech reports have become a major aspect of News discourse study.The analysis of speech reporting in sports news discourse can make readers perceive the insight of the reporter's attitude and position.To fully understand the sports spirit behind the ideological struggle in different languages,it is very necessary for news reports readers to read with a critical mind.The present study adopted Fairclough's theory of three-dimensional framework to analyze the news reports on China's swimmer Ye Shiwen's performance in women's 400 individual medley in London Olympics.The study was carried out from three aspects:modes of speech reporting,source of speech reporting and reporting verbs in order to analyze and make comparison with reports from different countries.The present aimed to solve two major problems:(1)How do the sports news discourse reflect its power and ideology via the reported speech?(2)What are the differences of choosing reported speeches between Chinese and English sports news discourse?Firstly,based on Fairclough's the first three modes of reporting speech:direct speech(DS),direct discourse slipping(DDS)and indirect speech(IS).The study conducted quantitative analysis and comparison between Chinese and English news discourses.Secondly,referring to Zhang Jian's category of news sources:'specific and exact source,semi-clear source and unclear source',the study also conducted quantitative analysis and comparison on the news discourse of the three countries.At last,reporting verbs were analyzed attentively.The analysis was based on 32 news discourse from five newspapers CNN,New York Post,BBC,The Guardian and Xinhua news.It is easy to find that news about Ye from the three countries all applied more direct speech than others.Chinese media tended to use more direct speech as well as the official words to prove the innocence of Chinese swimmers.As the host,British media adhered to a certain fair,with the most direct speech used,and tended to be the objective in reporting.While the U.S.media has also used a lot of direct speeches,but also used a lot of indirect speeches and prominent individual's words,fully reflecting the strong power of the U.S.government.Through the elaboration of the above theory and case analysis of news reports,this thesis verified the applicability of CDA in sports news discourse.On the other hand,it also revealed the different way in the modes and sources of reporting speech in Chinese,England and American media to safeguard their own interests and power.This paper also attempted to help readers develop a critical reading method and enhance the judgment in the reading of different media from different media.
