Research On Heroic Image In Katsuhiro Otomo's Animated Movies

A nation without a hero is a lamentable nation.As an important part of national culture,heroism has always been an enduring topic.Influenced by the culture of different countries,the values of heroes are also diversified.The construction of heroic discourse is not only a requirement of propagating the spirit of heroism in an era,but also an important narrative resource in contemporary works of art.Different from the "superhero" image in American films,the Japanese heroic images in films are subtle,restrained,and they lack a clear outline,but have more ambiguous feelings because of the traditional warrior culture and the impact of being-defeated culture.Including the heroes in a troubled time of Akira Kurosawa's films and the science-fiction heroes of Osamu Tezuka's animations,this phenomenon is happening everywhere.Artists are conveying their ideas and beliefs through an art form they love.So is Katsuhiro Otomo.His work is featured by a strong sense of reality and an interpretation of the society's super modernization.Many of his films have shown a situation where the society is unrest,people's values cannot be expressed to the greatest degree,and the world has always been in the state of being saved.Constructing the "mortal hero" in his works is a way for the director to give a hand to the illusory world.The heroes,who are different from the previous heroic images,have reflected the social reality from the other side.In addition,the selection of themes and the extreme creativity also contribute to the formation of an aesthetic style of Katsuhiro Otomo together.Clever art of grafting and the application of montage also present a new visual experience.The thesis contains four parts.The first part that shows the outline of the hero image.Then through the understanding of the social background?the analysis of the character's psychological mechanism and the typical image for introducing.The second part that is to shape the hero image from threeaspects: characters' difficult position?growth and the spiritual core.The third part that is to analyse image expression of the heroic image from two aspects: the character and the psychological portray.According to the plot proceeding,it express the visual characters by the realistic mean.The fourth part that is to discuss the modern reflection about the hero image.The paper analyse the theme and the thinking around this work's contradiction.
