Strategies Of Translating Foreign Personal Names Into Chinese

Personal names is more a special kind of cultural carrier with a long history of formation in each country than mere linguistic symbols to denote individuals.As the result of history,language,mentality,conventions,morality and ethics,all cultural connotation makes it much harder to translate personal names,especially those in the academic books,which,however,must be translated carefully to comply with the academic standards.This report adopts Encyclopedia of Translation Studies(2nd Edition)edited by Mona Baker as the translation material.By translating and analyzing the scholars' names in this book,the author summarizes his reflections in the translation process under the guidance of relating principles,hoping to make contribution to the unification of translating personal names.This paper can be divided into five parts.Chapter One is the introduction to the translation material,tasks and its significance.Chapter Two is the description of the whole translation procedure including pre-translation preparation,process of translation and proofreading.Chapter Three introduces three principles of name translation,and puts forward the author's own opinion on how to use these principles in translation practice.Chapter Four gives typical cases to demonstrate three translation strategies and their implementations.The last chapter is the conclusion of the whole translation task.
