The study of language learning strategies began in the 1970s,and scholars first focused on the excellent language learners.Excellent language learners have good language learning strategies and methods,studying their language learning strategies can help other students to obtain and use language learning strategies well,and promoting the development of language teaching.This thesis made a case study of six students with high Chinese proficiency.Through four-month case tracking research,the author investigated their use of Chinese learning strategies by applying the methods of classroom observation,questionnaires,and interviews.The author made a deep research on the frequency and the correlation of their Chinese learning strategies,discussed effective methods and specific learning steps in Chinese learning,analyzed their commonness and the factors that contributing to their success.The research showed that metacognitive,social and compensatory strategies were used frequently,and metacognitive strategy was in top use.Highly-proficient students had a strong sense of independent learning,strong learning ability,and could monitor and manage their own learning well.The emotional strategy was in the lowest use,because they always maintained a positive attitude in Chinese learning,and they could control their negative mood,so there was little tension or anxiety in their studies.Except the affective strategy,there was a strong correlation between the other learning strategies,thus indicated that the language learning strategies were used in conjunction with each other.They had much in common in Chinese learning:strong learning motivation and good learning attitude,their listening,speaking,reading and writing were practiced actively.Strong learning motivation,independent learning ability were the main factors that contributing to their excellent performance.Based on the findings of this study,some suggestions are made for Chinese teachers and students abroad:as for teachers,it's better to integrate language learning strategies into classroom teaching,strengthen students' awareness of strategy and autonomous learning consciousness,and let students complete learning tasks by using language learning strategies rationally.When learning from excellent students,foreign students should be combined with the actual situation,and choose strategies that are suitable for themselves.
