D.H.Lawrence is a famous novelist in 20 th century of England. In his life,he has written plenty of works. As one of Lawrence's representative works,Sons and Lovers is a full-length novel with rich autobiographic flavor.Based on the hometown of Lawrence,Eastwood, the novel makes an analysis of the relations between family members in the background of the industrial revolution and explores the crisis of Paul's personality formation.Personality is a mental mechanism to control people's behaviors.By the theory of personality structure Freud can construct multi levels of the personality to explore inner world of the people. Therefore,by the application of the personality structure theory the study of Paul's personality structure can be more general and profound.By using Sons and Lovers as the research material, the thesis makes an analysis of Paul's Id,Ego and Superego to find out the changes of the personality in the process of Paul's growth and reveals the real reasons why Paul loses the balance of personality. From the process of Paul's personality formation, the conclusion is that the unbalance of Paul's personality results from the Id,the Ego and the Superego together. As the Id is excessively strong and the Superego is relatively weak, the Ego becomes anxious.Meanwhile, the Ego cannot make proper application of the Ego Defense Mechanism, which causes the unbalance of personality. Therefore, only when the Ego makes proper application of the Defense Mechanism can the personality be kept in balance. To conclude,by the study of Paul's personality structure,we can not only deepen the understanding of the novel, but also clearly realize Paul's personality formation.
