Interpreting is in nature a verbal communication activity, while as the most basic rule instructing conversational communication,Cooperative Principle(CP)can certainly be applied to the analysis of interpreting process.Based on this logic, this report is to give a descriptive analysis of the author's interpreting practice and strategies adopted in Lancaster China Catalyst Programme(LCCP)from the perspective of Cooperative Principle.Entrusted by the LCCP management group, the author worked as the interpreter for a UK biotechnology company specializing in stem cell drug discovery that tried to find a commercial partner in China.By reviewing and summarizing the interpreting task, including the pre-task preparations, challenges encountered and strategies adopted on the spot, and feedback from the client, the author finds that CP is frequently followed by the interpreter unconsciously, especially when adopting different interpreting strategies.Usually CP is observed to ensure a faithful, clear and coherent expression;while sometimes it is also violated for the sake of conveying the conversational implicature or keeping a pleasant business atmosphere. Therefore, the author made a report on the interpreting in LCCP from the perspective of CP to describe and analyze the application of it in business interpreting strategies in order to help improve the interpreting quality and communication effectiveness.
