The Analysis Of Aptness For Sosa's Virtue Epistemology

Epistemology is the important academic realm of the western analytic philosophy research trends in the present age.Tripartite definition of the traditional knowledge,which expresses the knowledge as the true conviction for defending.Until the last century in 60 s,“Gettier problem” turned out and changed this definition completely.He proposed that the tripartite definition of the traditional knowledge is not a necessary and sufficient condition of knowledge,which influences the core and guidance of contemporary epistemology.In this case,the scholars represented by Sosa created and developed the virtue epistemology,which based on the connotation of moral ethics.“Aptness” is one of the important central concepts of Sosa's virtue epistemology.As the representative figure of virtue epistemology,Sosa proposed the new epistemology,which combines internalism and externalism.The ethical implications of this new epistemology can date back to Aristotle's moral ethics from ancient Greece.Through the perspective of virtue,intellectual virtue is regarded as an important foundation of cognitive behaviors.As a particular behavior,this behavior includes three structural characteristics – Accuracy,Adroitness and Aptness.In order to obtain the intellectual behaviors of final knowledge,those three characteristics above are indispensable.And the most important one is aptness.Aptness is a way to judge whether a behavior is accurate and whether the result is adroit.Putting it into the cognitive behavior plays a role in defense to obtain the true conviction in the whole cognitive process.This article makes a detailed arrangement of Sosa's virtue epistemology and ideological background,theoretical framework,developing process and its own characteristics.What's more,this article comprehensive displays the theoretical connotation and innovation of aptness.However,aptness was also faced with own theoretical dilemmas,and it is not able to eliminate Gettier counter-examples.This article is trying to provide a repairmen of aptness from the internal virtue epistemology.
