This translation report is an introduction of C-E (Chinese-to-English) translation project on twelve essays selected from Selected Modern Chinese Essays all written by famous writers since the May 4th Movement. This book, compiled and translated all by Zhang Peiji, is regarded as a precious reference for translation teaching. Run-on sentences are typical in the Chinese long sentences with loose sentence pattern and several sentences without subjects. While there are no obvious logical conjunctions in most sentences, the parataxis of Chinese can be well represented. The fact that run-on sentences are always found in essays constitutes the most important feature of essays, which is scrambled in appearance but united in spirit.The above mentioned features lead to the difficulty of this report, which is how to make the implicit information explicit. It can be divided into (1) how to express the connotative meaning effectively; (2) how to make the implicit logical meaning explicit specifically.Guided by Sperber and Wilson’s relevance theory, this report follows the two basic principles of ostensive-inferential communication and optimal relevance to solve the above problems with corresponding strategies. Based on this theory, the author tries to solve problems such as how to recur the connotative meaning in essays by supplement and transformation and simplification, how to integrate the implicit logical relation in run-on sentences by utilizing the methods of amplification, literal translation with annotation and free translation.This translation report provides specific methods in handling the implicit information in C-E essay translation, thus deepening the author’s understanding of problems of the same sort and offering references for the translation practice in the future.
