The Developmental Characteristics Of Gelugpa In Contemporary Taiwan

The development of Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan canbetracedto the exchanges between Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism during Kuomintang reignin continental.After the national government moved to Taiwan,Gelugpa began to developed in Taiwan.History of Gelugpa in Taiwan can be divided into two phases.Inthefirststage,Gelugpa developedvery slow with fewer believers and only concentrated in north area.Inthesecondstage,alotof monks have beensentto Taiwan andanumberoforganizationshavebeenestablished.The number of believers increased considerably more than the previous phase,and theinfluence of Gelugpa throughout thewholeisland.In addition,the 14 th Dalai Lama has visited Taiwan three times;eachtimeofhisvisitinghaslifted a surge of faith in Tibetan Buddhism.Taiwan Society has undergone great changes since the lifting of the martial law in 1987.Religious activities developed rapidly after the withdrawal of political forces.The development process of Gelugpain contemporary Taiwan has shown a lot of features adapted to Taiwanese society.Forexample,in order to attract more believers,the temple is built in densely populated urban areas.Mediaand Internethavebeenused,too.Apartfromthe adaption to Taiwan Society itself,Gelugpashowedthecharacteristicsinfluenced by Engaged Buddhism,especiallywhenagroupcalled Bliss Wisdomemerges.Bliss Wisdomorganization may be the fifth largest group in Taiwanexceptthe "Four Hills" of Engaged Buddhism.Bliss Wisdom is a typical organizationcombined of Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism.Bliss Wisdom group plays an important role in the development of Gelugpa.The main feature of this study ofamasterdegreeis to stretchthe researchscope outside the continentandtake the development of Gelugpa in Taiwan as aresearch object.Afteranintroductionofthe development of Gelugpa in Taiwan,thisstudyfocuseson the characteristics of the adaptation of Gelugpato the contemporary Taiwan society.Compared with the previous researches on the Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan,the innovation of this study lies in the history and development characteristics of Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan for the first time.On the basis of fieldwork,this paper summarizes the operation mode and the contents of organizations.In summing up the characteristics of the development of Gelugpa,thisstudyanalyzedthecombination characteristics of the combination of Bliss Wisdom and its influence on the development of Gelugpa and even Tibetan Buddhism in Taiwan.
